Advanced Placement: The American College Prep Curriculum

NCPA uses an American curriculum culminating in rigorous Advanced Placement courses in all subject areas except for Performing Arts and Chinese. AP courses are taught at a college level, preparing our students for university and often earning them college credit - enabling them to graduate early or take a more diverse course load once in college.

Research-Based Assessment Model

All courses are graded using standards-based grading, a method of reporting student achievement based on research-based best practices. Under standards-based grading, students are graded separately for academic knowledge and habits of learning. This separation allows our teachers to more effectively adapt their instruction to each individual's needs and helps students focus on what they need to learn in order to improve rather than simply earning a few extra percentage points on their grade.

Curriculum Standards

Our non-AP courses generally adhere to the Common Core State Standards, "a set of high-quality academic standards in mathematics and English language arts/literacy (ELA)" followed by forty-one American states. Courses in the performing arts, visual arts, health and PE, and counseling follow their own discipline-specific standards.
All non-AP science courses use the Next Generation Science Standards, a set of K-12 science standards developed through the cooperation of 26 states and partners including the National Research Council, the National Science Teachers Association, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Our Visual Arts and Performing Arts departments use NCAS, a framework centered around the four key areas of creating, performing, responding to, and connecting with artistic works. These standards have been developed recognizing the "unique and essential contributions of the arts to every child's growth and development" in the areas of communication, personal realization, culture and history, wellbeing, and community engagement.
Although NCPA is an American-style school, our health and physical education courses are built on the excellent curriculum from the Ontario Ministry of Education. Ontario's Health and PE curriculum focuses on healthy, active living in earlier grades and specialized courses in grades 11 and 12. In addition to a recognition of the many benefits of an active lifestyle, the curriculum also supports the development of character in striving for a personal best, playing fairly and equitably, and respecting diversity.
Our advisory and junior and senior seminar courses are based on the ASCA standards, with some standards also drawn from the International School Counselor Association to meet the needs of our student population. ASCA standards cover the domains of academic, career, and social-emotional development to "create a culture of college and career readiness for all students."
