First Weeks of School

One of the ideas at the heart of NCPA is the GUIS vision of Pathways for Purposeful Lives. For students, those pathways are discovered gradually through the experiences, relationships, challenges, and choices that make up high school.

During these first weeks of school, students have already begun that process in many different ways. Some have joined a new CCA, tried out for an athletic team, taken on a leadership role, supported younger or newer students, or spoken with a university representative. These experiences may look very different from one another, but each gives students an opportunity to learn more about their interests, strengths, relationships, and aspirations.

Academic learning remains central to the NCPA experience, but we also believe that success in high school is broader than grades alone. Students grow when they learn to collaborate with others, take responsibility, persist through challenge, make thoughtful decisions, contribute to their community, and explore new possibilities. These are the kinds of experiences that help students develop as Negotiators, Collaborators, Planners, and Achievers.

This is also why we provide such a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom. With 74 CCAs offered this trimester, along with athletics, student leadership, service, and other activities, students have many ways to try something new and discover where they can contribute. The goal is not for every student to do everything. It is for every student to find meaningful ways to participate, grow, and become more aware of who they are and what matters to them.

Families can play an important role in this process. I encourage you to ask your child not only about their classes, but also about the experiences they are choosing: What are you trying this year? What are you enjoying? What has challenged you? What are you learning about yourself? Where are you contributing?

Over time, these experiences become part of a student’s pathway. Our role is to provide strong opportunities, guidance, and support. Our hope is that students will increasingly learn to make thoughtful choices about which opportunities to pursue and how those experiences can help them build a purposeful future.

Thank you, as always, for your partnership and trust.
